Do Women Become Invisible in Midlife? Visibility, Menopause, and Finding Meaning

In this episode of Unstuck, the hosts discuss whether women “of a certain age” become invisible, linking the idea to midlife, perimenopause, and menopause. Lisa argues older women are more visible than ever, while her co-host describes feeling less visible after leaving a senior NHS management role and starting a new business, connecting visibility to confidence, recognition, and self-worth.

They reference Gail Saltz’s writing on “middle-agism” and Erikson’s concept of generativity versus stagnation, emphasising an identity shift from external validation (including attractiveness) to meaning through contribution. Using a schema therapy lens, they explore unmet core emotional needs (competence, belonging) and their SOS coping model: submit, opt out, or storm in, aiming instead for a balanced “lifeguard” response with self-compassion. They also examine media and marketing pressures, celebrity examples, and how socioeconomic status shapes the experience of visibility.

Tanya & Lisa

Dr Tanya Petersen and Dr Lisa Corbett met at university at 18, living next door to each other in halls. Nearly thirty years later, they're still friends, and for the past seven years they've been colleagues too.

Tanya is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist (DClinPsy), HCPC-registered, and an ISST Advanced Accredited Schema Therapist and Supervisor. She qualified in 2008, worked for years in NHS forensic services, and first encountered schema therapy in 2004 — which, in her words, felt like coming home.

Lisa is an HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist (PsychD). She took the scenic route into psychology, via corporate work and volunteering with children's charities in South Africa, and has since worked across NHS and private settings.

They founded 2 Together to make schema psychology accessible — through the free Unstuck podcast, self-guided courses, and one-to-one online therapy.
